Rudolfsgnad Family Book Review

Family Book for the Catholic parish of Rudolfsgnad Banat by Philip Lung and Elisabeth Annau nee Kirchner

The book covers 1866 to * 1938 / oo 1944 / + 1930, and is based on the church records from Rudolfsgnad. Series of Danube Swabian Origins Research Volume 171, German Local Kinship Books 00.617, Central Office for Personal and Family History, 60509 Frankfurt am Main, published by: Philip Lung, Villingen-Schwenningen, 2011, hard cover, A5 format, 828 pages, + regional map and village map, price € 45, - plus shipping costs.

The new release is not a remake, but a revision of the Family Book published 12 years ago, this time without the inclusion of Deutsch-Etschka and Sigmundfeld. Since copies of the church books of the parish in Rudolfsgnad Banat (today Serbia) were found to complement the data that was already available, the necessity of a revision was self-evident.

The authors have augmented their substantial work with a surprising long list of sources, including numerous indications of origin and other references (such as lists of the people lost in the internment camp in Rudolfsgnad). The editor shows concern for the credibility of the content with numerous source citations. The book has an attractive graphic design (text, image inserts, cover), is a reliable reference work, and the book will cause a small "sensation" among Rudolfsgnaders and the Banat genealogy community.
Compliments and thanks to all involved.

It is praiseworthy that the filial parishes of Matscha and Kurtitsch, and the earlier Prädien (Pußten): Czifra Sofronya, Lökösháza (with Báró Tomassen, Biró, Edelspacher, Vásáhelyi) Friebeisz Sofornya, Kutas, Ó-Topilla, Tövisegyháza, Uj-Topilla and the "Bahnwärterhäuser Nr. 78-95" were considered.

The settlement of the Sanktmartin site began in 1724, well ahead of timeframe of the records from the Viennese Court Archives provided by Wilhelm and Kallbrunner (The "Vienna Lists"). The death records in the church books of Sanktmartin were used as a source for the lists of first settlers "catholicus germanicus".

The author and the publisher of this Family Book is recognized and praised for this work.
The range of family books will be enriched by this valuable contribution which expands the research possibilities.

Die Banater Schwaben by Nikolaus Engelmann, first printed in German in 1961. It describes the history and culture of the German settlements in the Banat, with minimal mention of the events following WWII. It was one of the first such books about the Banat heritage to appear in English. It was originally addressed to the descendants of the Banat Germans who settled in North Dakota, whose knowledge of their background was minimal and whose interest was high.

Contributions to the settlement history of the Germans in the Banat. Series: The Banat and the Banat Swabians, Volume 5, Editor: Elke Hoffmann / Peter-Dietmar Leber / Walter Wolf, published by the Landsmannschaft der Banater Schwaben, Munich 2011, ISBN 3-9229979-63-7, large format, 670 pages + 1 map, price € 45 - plus shipping costs.

To order, contact: Landsmannschaft der Banater Schwaben, Sendlingerstrasse 46 / I, 80331 Munich, Tel: 089 - 23 55 73-0, or send an E-mail.
The volume includes contributions on the settlement and early history of 149 villages from the Romanian Banat. For family researchers, this is a concise representation of local history and references are included to other sources. The quality of contributions varies according to the preface, since these were not written by historians. The documentation is not always exemplary.

The accompanying map of the entire territory of the Banat allows for a localization of the landscape, the tripartite division shows the boundaries (1920) after the First World War. For the family researcher, the reverse side of the map is valuable. Here is an index of German geographical names listed in table form. It lists 264 names in German / Romanian / Hungarian / Serbian / Croatian - Serbian (Cyrillic). There is a need for diacritical characters and Cyrillic letters, so that one can easily find the villages on other maps. The number of designated towns in the three sections - Romanian, Serbian and Hungarian - is different and incomplete.

A Brief Description
In the 1700's, the Austro-Hungarian Empire recruited and sponsored colonists to emigrate to Hungary to settle land that had recently been liberated from Turkish occupation. Many of the colonists came from Lorraine, Alsace & Schwaben and other areas in what is now the western part of Germany.

During these sponsored migrations, the colonists arrived in Vienna to register with the government. Happily, the Austrian bureaucrats kept detailed records of these early settlers. The records include lists of the settlers, including when they arrived in Vienna to register (the Vienna Lists), and records of reimbursements to local residents who housed some settlers until their new homes were ready (Schlafkreuzerrechnungen). These records or lists included the settler's name, and often, also the number of family members traveling with him, age, occupation, and the area or town they were from.

The Vienna Lists and other settler registration lists were organized into the "Quellen zur Deutschen Siedlungsgeschichte in Südosteuropa" [Sources of German Settlement History in Southeast Europe] by Wilhelm, Franz und Josef Kallbrunner, published in 1935.

More recently, Stefan Stader combined this information with several other sources of information on the colonists (over 200 in all), such as Heimatbücher and Familienbücher for the villages, and local histories; this is called the "Sammelwerk Donauschwäbischer Kolonisten". Regretably, Stefan Stader died before he could complete the task of organizing all of the colonist information. Currently, there are 6 volumes, ending at Sch- surnames. Volume 7 is expected to be available by the end of 2011.

It is an excellent source for locating where in Europe one's ancestors emigrated from and when they arrived in Hungary.

The Stader information and the Vienna Lists are most helpful if you can trace your family line back to an ancestor in the mid-1700's, since that is the period when there was the greatest influx of colonists, and the period when colonists registered with the authorities in Vienna.

The books are available as a series of 6 Volumes, divided by surname:
Volume I : A – D
Volume II : E – G
Volume III: H – Kap
Volume IV : Kar – L
Volume V : M – O
Volume VI: P – Sch
Volume VII is expected to be printed in 2011.

You can view an example of the content here.
Volumes 1 – 6 are all currently available. The Price is 43 € each for Volumes 1 – 5. Volume 6 is priced at 41 €. The prices shown above do not include shipping costs.

The Institute for Research of Expelled Germans (Institut für Vertriebenenforschung) is a non-profit academic research organisation working to document and bring social and historiographic awareness to the largely unknown story of more than 10,000,000 ethnic German civilians who were subjected to ethnicity-based forced deportation, compulsory labour, expulsion, and in some cases starvation and ethnic violence following World War II with varying support and involvement by the governments of the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, and Yugoslavia. We are a non-political research institute; in no way do we justify the atrocities of the Nazis or undermine the genocides committed against other ethnic groups by the Germans or Soviets during the same timeframe. We strongly reject any revisionist, Antisemitic, or pro-Nazi tendencies. Rather, we merely aspire to commemorate and document the lost history, culture, and plight of one of the least-known, yet largest refugee communities of the 20th century.

Elisenhain-Josefsdorf-North Dakota Family Register 1872-1990 DRAFT

By Dr. David Dreyer
Author's note:
This rough draft contains all the data from the available vital records of Josefsdorf and Elisenhain as well as data for selected North Dakota Banat settlers. In its present state it likely contains some errors in fact, typos and formatting. Moreover it lacks the all important locality and wives indexes.
Since we are forced to set this project aside for the present due to the press of other matters it appears that it is practical to post the file in its present form.

Those who have corrections, additions or wish to create the missing indices for inclusion in a final draft can contact the author to obtain an editable version of the document.
